SEBI Nomination Rules 2026: How Better Nomination Can Help Prevent Unclaimed Investments
What Changed in SEBI’s Nomination Framework?
On May 29, 2026, SEBI issued modified norms for nomination in demat accounts and mutual fund folios. The stated objective includes making the nomination process easier and preventing the generation of unclaimed assets.
Under the framework, investors can provide up to three nominees. The circular also provides online and offline nomination mechanisms and allows investors to change or cancel nominations as permitted under the framework.
Why Nomination Is Relevant to Unclaimed Assets
When an investor dies, the absence of clear nomination or updated family records can make the next stage more complicated. The issue becomes even harder when the family does not know which investments existed in the first place.
Nomination is therefore one part of a larger asset-continuity system: updated KYC, accessible investment records, clear ownership information and family awareness all matter.
Nomination Does Not Replace Ownership Verification
Nomination should not be treated as a universal substitute for legal ownership or succession requirements. Depending on the circumstances, transmission or other documentation may still be required.
Investors should therefore keep nomination information updated while also maintaining a consolidated list of investments and important documents.
A Practical Family Investment Checklist
Create a simple investment inventory and review it at least periodically.
- List demat accounts and folios.
- Record company names and old physical holdings.
- Check nominee details.
- Keep PAN/KYC and bank information current.
- Tell a trusted family member where the records are maintained.
- Preserve documents needed for transmission or claims.
Topline Solutions: The Connection Is Family Asset Discovery
Topline Solutions becomes relevant when a family discovers an investment only after the original investor is no longer actively managing it.
In such cases, the challenge may involve identifying the investment, understanding the holder/nominee position, checking the company/RTA records and determining what documentation is required. Topline Solutions can help organise this discovery and process-mapping stage so that the family can approach the relevant official channel with a clearer understanding of the case.
The final legal or regulatory outcome depends on the specific ownership and documentation circumstances.
Topline Solutions: When Nomination Is Only One Piece of the Puzzle
Nomination can reduce friction, but families can still face a problem if they do not know what investments existed. Topline Solutions can help in that later-stage discovery by organising old investment records, identifying the relevant holdings and helping map the documentation and company/RTA/IEPFA route that may apply.
